Development of a macro and microscopic approach to investigate the geochemistry of radioactive waste disposal systems

1) Geochemical and mineralogical characterization of rocks and fracture fillings of Boda Siltstone Formation and determination of chemical composition of ground water at the area;

2) Macroscopic (wet chemistry) investigations of key radionuclides in argillaceous rock systems (Opalinus Clay and Boda Siltstone systems) onsidered as potential host rocks for radioactive waste repositories;

3) Geochemical modelling of experimental sorption data (available codes: MINSORB, GEMS);

4) Bulk-XAS investigations on pure clay minerals to identify the surface sorbed species (inner sphere/outer sphere complexes);

5) X-ray microanalytical (microfluorescence/absorption/diffraction) and microtomography investigations on heterogeneous clay rich rock samples to identify the mineral responsible for the uptake of the radionuclides.
